Research forecasts world will hit cataclysmic levels of warming in less than a decade.
In the annual “Global Carbon Budget” report, an international team of over 100 scientists warned that if global greenhouse gas emissions remain at projected 2022 levels, there is a 50% likelihood that by 2032, the world will exhaust its estimated carbon budget and breach the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to within 1.5 degrees Celsius. Worryingly, at the current 1.2 degrees Celsius of warming, the world is already undergoing devastating consequences, and every 0.1 “degree of warming will exponentially exacerbate the climate crisis.” Led by Professor Pierre Friedlingstein of the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, the analysis also highlights that deforestation remains a “main driver” of global emissions, and there is “strong potential” to decarbonize through halting deforestation. Scientific data from many sources show deforestation is significantly linked to the animal-people meat and dairy industry. Leanne Fan, a ninth grader from San Diego, developed Finsen Headphones, which combines machine learning and blue light healing to identify and treat middle ear infections in children. The invention offers a low-cost, antibiotic-free solution, to potentially help the over 700 million annual cases of middle ear infections worldwide and could prevent up to 60% of hearing loss in children, many of whom are underprivileged. For her efforts, Leanne won 3M’s Young Scientist Challenge and was awarded the title “America’s Top Young Scientist” along with US$25,000. Kudos, Leanne Fan, on your ingenious new technology! Hydroelectricity is one source of power utilized by the African nation but has become unreliable due to droughts caused by climate change. Kenya has an enormous capacity for geothermal power production that is mostly untouched. Geothermal energy is a renewable resource of heat generated from within the Earth. For the past few decades, a number of countries have been working with Kenya to help them harness the underground energy that exists in their unique landscape. Now, it is the seventh largest producer of geothermal energy in the world. In Olkaria, a region in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, 800 megawatts of electricity are being generated by five geothermal power plants. That’s sufficient to power four million homes each year! Âu Lạc (Vietnam) based company, Ecosoi, converts pineapple leaves to vegan silk fiber.
Ecosoi is one of the first pioneers to produce vegan silk from pineapple foliage. It can be used to make vegan leather goods and garments, as the fiber is more durable than cotton. Repurposing the leaves helps preserve the environment and also provides jobs to the villagers who are involved in weaving the vegan silk. Ecosoi operates as a cooperative with its farmer suppliers, and provides them with the technology required to convert the raw materials into the finished product. The company currently produces two to three tons of vegan silk per month, most of which is exported to the United Kingdom, the Philippines and Japan, with a goal to double its output in 2023. Scientists working in Kibale National Park, Uganda, were surprised to see video footage taken of Fiona, a wild chimpanzee-person, showing her mom Sutherland a leaf just to share the pleasure of viewing it. Sharing an experience of observing the world around them is a trait that scientists have previously suggested to be unique to human beings. Co-author of the study, animal-people communication expert Dr. Simon Townsend said, “Our observations suggest that in specific social circumstances chimps may show each other objects of interest, to share attention about them, and that this behavior may not be unique to humans.” The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, could have implications for the study of the evolution of human social cognition.
